Fair Trading Minister, and Celebrante's local member, Anthony Roberts is warning couples preparing to tie the knot to do their homework so their wedding day does not become a financial disaster.
Mr Roberts said Fair Trading regularly receives wedding related complaints and enquiries.
“Fair Trading received 450 complaints in 2010/11,” he said.
“Complaints were about deposits, refunds, reception venues, wedding photography, weddings dresses and suits, right through to honeymoon bookings.
“Photography/videography services were the highest area of complaint. Complaints related to delays or non-supply and/or an unsatisfactory product. Wedding dresses were the next most common complaint. Most complaints related to the quality of the finished dress or cancellations by the consumer.
“Complaints about reception venues followed and the most common complaints were about cancellations by the consumer, followed by dissatisfaction with the service provided. Cars, flowers and rings featured in the remainder of complaints, as well as a broad cross section of issues with no particular pattern.”
According to the latest ABS data, in 2009, 120,118 Australian couples tied the knot and 40,516 of those weddings were in NSW. In 2009, the greatest increase in registered marriages was in NSW (up by 1,379 or 3.5% on 2008).
Mr Roberts said being well prepared and informed could help couples ensure their wedding is a special day, not marred by disappointment or unexpected costs.
“Start by obtaining detailed written quotes and written confirmation of arrangements and any deposits required,” he said. “Be clear on refund policies and conditions and any cancellation charges.
“Make sure you know exactly what is included in the photography package including the number of photos, proofs supplied and your rights to the photos. It is also a good idea to give your photographer a list of photos you want taken on the day.
“Wedding dresses can be expensive, so check with the dressmaker or retailer about alterations, fittings and special care instructions.
“When booking the honeymoon; use a licensed travel agent. Get the details of your trip in writing including locations, standard of accommodation, time of departure and special conditions such as tours, tickets, meals, entry fees, passports and visa requirements.
“We like to think nothing will go wrong with a well planned wedding, but it can.” |
